Uwe Friesel, born in 1939, lives in Salzwedel as a freelance author after years in Italy and Sweden. He has published novels, short stories, poetry, books for young people, and radio plays. His texts have been translated into English, Czech, Russian, French, and Italian.
Rowohlt Verlag has published his translations of Nabokov and Updike, among others. His anthology of German freedom poetry, “Noch ist Deutschland nicht verloren”, first published by Hanser in 1969, has been reprinted twice by other publishers.
In the 1970s, Friesel founded and co-edited Autoren Edition. From 1989 to 1994, he was chairman of the Association of German Writers. He is a member of the PEN Club and co-founder of the International Writers’ Centers in Visby and Rhodes.
For example, he was awarded the Rome Prize Villa Massimo and the Major Lower Saxony Artist Scholarship (Nicolas Born Prize) for his literature.
